The Governor of Kakamega County, Hon. Wycliffe Oparanya has today pledged to support families of those who were affected by yesterday's tragic event that happened to some gold miners in his county. The announcement came through a tweet on his official twitter account where he condoled with the families of those who lost there loved ones.
Five miners are reported to have lost their lives while in search of gold after the mine they were excavating from caved in burying them alive. Eight others are nursing injuries they sustained as a result of this incident. The mining operation at Bushiangala in Ikolomani is said to have been affected by the heavy rains that have been pounding the region lately.
This has forced the county government of Kakamega to announce that all mining activities in the county have been banned during this rainy season. The governor stated that law enforcement agencies will take charge to ensure that this directive is implemented.
The governor also called upon the ministry of mining to come forward and find ways of assisting small scale miners in their activities. He said that this would be a good option in ensuring that proper policies and guidelines are instituted to ensure that the activities of the miners are streamlined for proper management.
Most of those who were injured were treated and allowed to return home to continue with recovery. Only one individual is said to have been in a serious condition and is still hospitalizes for specialized treatment
