While in Kenya might be having well over 130 prisons that are all active and used to contain both male and female inmates, there is only a hand full of them that are specifically made to contain the worst of all prisoners. Most of this prisons where constructed during the colonial times. Let's have a look at the 5 maximum prisons in Kenya.

1. Kamiti maximum securty prison.

Arguably the oldest and the largest prison in the country sitting on a 1200 acres of land. It is the most famous one too. Used in the 1980s to contain political prisoners. It boasts 9f very tall perimeter walls and watch towers. With one of the largest prison police strength in the country. It has a population of over 2000 prisoners most of whom are serving 5 year sentence and above.

2. Manyani maximum securty prison.

This is the toughest prison in kenya both for the prisoners and officers alike. This is due to the location where the prison is. Located in the middle of nowhere it is said that wild animals roam the prison compound at night. It has the harshest conditions that even the officers too feel the burden.

3.Shimo LA Tewa maximum security prison.

Located in Mombasa it is also surrounded by very tall perimeter walls and watch towers. Officers there are no nonsense as those who frequent the Mombasa Malindi highway will tell you. Added to the harsh weather conditions that Mombasa might from time to time experience it could be hard for someone. It is famous for holding somali pirates.

4. Naivasha maximum prison.

Located in Naivasha, it is also one of the largest prison facilities in the country. It has also been in the news several just like any other maximum prison because of various allegations. It has one of the largest numbers in terms of prisoners population and that of officers too. The fact that it was strategically built up on a hill makes it even more ideal for what it is ment for.

5. Kibos maximum security prison.

Located in Kisumu. I'll tell for free this prisons isn't easy. The prison is very old and the conditions haven't changed much. Housing for both prisoners and officers are in a sorrow condition. From time to time disease outbreaks occurs, living either prisoners dead or admitted in hospital officers too
