Clean and Safe Water for Rural Communities in Laisamis Sub-county Marsabit

Residents of Kargi/Southhorr in Marsabit county breathe a sign of relief after county government in support of development partners initiated a water project in the area reducing the distance they have to walk in search of water to survive.They depends on shallow wells for both human and livestock use for a decades.

In support of the livestock market system a program funded by USAID, the community in Kargi organized themselves to form a ward planning committee aimed at spearheading community governance and development initiatives across the ward .To streamline management and water revenue collection, they applied for innovative grant from livestock market system program in installing prepaid meters .A new projects has improved access to clean water , reducing the trip to collect water and also availability of water reduced competition over water supplies.

The residents who have over the decades had to trek several kilometers in search of scarce commodities will now receiving water in less than 2 meters after the concern worldwide rehabilitating the pipeline systems through a livelihood grant the management committee applied.

" We had never had water less than two meters from our house and we had to walk for long distance to fetch it,even the one we get it not good for human consumption." Said Mary

Commending the projects in the area, Mr Mohamed, a resident of Kargi said availability of water help children in school , villagers won't have to go in search of water and instead do other economic activity.He added that dependable water flow help in reducing competition over a previously scarce resource.

The improvement in access to clean water have been a life changer for residents who depends on shallow wells, the community in the past have had to face many challenges in accessing clean water and rely on one borehole for everyone use, when it ran dry , women were forced to wait all day long for the borehole to regenerate,the situation has improved when catholic relief services through caritas in Marsabit supported them by installing a new generator at a cost of 1.7 million that produced enough water for both domestic and livestock use.

" It is easy to get water anytime,we are happy with the installation of generator." Said Mr Ibrahim Burole an operator at Rarima water borehole

Another resident from Rarima said they used to depends on dam which could not last for long.

" During dry seasons,we were forced to travel long distance to fetch water,it is not easy and not sure to get it, now we can get water closer to our home,thanks to development partners." She said.

The community health was also affected by the prevalence of water borne disease and inadequate personal hygiene since the heath issues related to the availability and use of safe water.

"Since we got clean water,our life has improved,our house and all facilities are much cleaner,we no longer have problems with skin related disease,we developed a habit of using water in washing our hands." Said public health officer Mr Solomon

Water stress is an ongoing dilemma that set to worsen as demands growing more than twice the rate of population,smart meters provide a cost effective and scalable solutions.

" It has been a challenge for the community to access clean water but the dhakane borehole provided a lasting solution, children will go to school and the cases of absenteeism is a thing of the past." Said Solomon

The borehole provide safe clean water for hundreds of Kargi residents and other nearby village like Southhorr where residents, children and livestock are able to access water.

The Nawiri project has proposed the construction of three water kiosks adding the numbers to the existing one.

According to the borehole treasury Mary Obeile the water kiosk is part of the communitie's project whose construction was done by the caritas.

The county government of Marsabit also sunk 150 borehole across the county to address the problem of water shortages and distribution of plastic tanks to the residents, the borehole are drilled in certain strategic areas where residents and livestock get water.The county government also bought 16 water bowsers to supply water and according to county executive committee members for water , the plans are underway to increase the numbers.

The county CECM water and sanitation Mr Adan Kanano said the water management committee have been trained and the management have to use revenue prudently where minor technical problem and maintenance would be fixed using levies collected without paralyzing water operation.

According to Kanano, the county government of Marsabit working with company that offer latest technological innovations installed water ATMs in 14 boreholes across the county with the aimed of sustainable management of water .
