Four university students drown, two others rescued while swimming in River Kathita, Tharaka Nithi County, police say search and rescue still underway.
Police said the students were spending their weekend while swimming in the river before the unfortunate happened.
According to reports seen by the press, the students drowned on different spots before two of them were rescued by local divers who were mobilised from among the milling crowd that thronged the river.
Their Colleagues from Tharaka Nithi University argued that the four decided to swim but unluckily, they were unable to come out from the water few minutes after diving, prompting them to raise the alarm at around 3pm.
The university administration said that they were notified about the tragic incident few hours later. This made scores of students rush to the scene before a group of locals were mobilised to retrieve the body of the students.
The rescuers first retrieved the body of one student after 21 minutes, as the second one was found after another 31 minutes. The search for the remaining are still on.
