Online Scams: Be Careful When Buying Products Online, La Sivyo Mtaoshwa, Kinoti Warns

Director of Criminal Investigations George Kinoti when he appeared before the Defense Committee to answer questions about the investigation into victim Agnes Wanjiru on December 2, 2021

Director of Criminal Investigations George Kinoti has asked Kenyans to be careful when shopping for products online this holiday season.

In a statement, Kinoti said his office had received complaints from people who ordered goods online but were not delivered.

He added that others had also complained of poor quality compared to that advertised on social media platforms.

“We have received numerous reports from customers who have ordered products advertised on social media sites, especially Instagram, but the products have not been delivered or the quality is not similar to that advertised,” he said. Kinoti declared Monday.

The DCI boss called on Kenyans to resist the temptation to send money to genuine dealers, who later turn out to be violators.

He also noted that most of the victims of these online scams are women who buy trendy outfits and jewelry.

“You are advised to be careful when shopping online, first verifying the identity of the seller and the address of their businesses,” Kinoti said.
