Details Emerge On What Happened To The Police Officer Who Tear-Gassed Karua In Gussi Stadium

Martha Karua's event at Gusii Stadium was interrupted by a blast of tear gas, however, the perpetrator has been recognized by the police. A tear gas canister explosion caused mayhem during Ida Odinga and Martha Karua's tour of Kisii County on behalf of the Azimio la Umoja- One Kenya alliance. It was planned that they would both go to the opening of the Kisii Gender-Based Violence Center.

Bruno Shioso, a spokesman for the police department, issued a statement in which he named the junior officer who blew up the tear gas canister. To help "unravel all circumstances surrounding the occurrence," Shioso said, "the mentioned officer is currently in jail." A tear gas canister exploded a few meters from the podium in a video posted on Standard Digital Videos just before Martha addressed the crowd.

When outgoing Kisii County Governor James Ongwae was introducing Martha Karua to the stage, the canister went off. From the audience, only a few meters away from where the leaders were sat, smoke could be seen rising. Security personnel whisked the leaders away to safety. After the event was cut short, seats could be seen strewn throughout the stadium. Videos that have gone viral on social media show sparse people exiting the stadium, along with plastic chairs and broken ones left strewn throughout the grounds.

Cops trying to restore order were thrown into a scuffle by unruly kids who were throwing plastic chairs at them. As a result of the turmoil, some fans were hurt; medics from the Kenya Red Cross rushed to the scene to provide first aid.
