Family in Agony as State Demands Hefty Payment to Bury Their Kin Who Was Shot by Police Officers

Samson Odongo went for his usual morning walk but on December 27, he didn't return to his young family. The 28-year-old was shot by police officers when chaos broke in Mukuru Kwa Njenga.

According to his wife, Elizabeth Achieng, he received a phone call that the father of four was fighting for his life at Cana Health Centre. When she reached the health facility, Odongo was already dead and his body was transported to City Mortuary.

His wife, who is expectant with their fifth child and may give birth either in June or July, said she is unable to raise the expenses required to transport the body to Siaya to be interred. She is a housewife and has children to attend school.

“We came up with a budget of Sh280,000 to cover the mortuary bill, transport the body upcountry to Alego Usonga, Siaya County, and funeral and burial expenses. We initially planned to just clear the mortuary bill and get his body on January 14, but now we have no money, so we hope to get it discharged on 21st,” she said.
