Kenyans experienced an online frenzy on the 1st of May 2021 after a photo of a man sleeping on a couch on a motorcycle went viral. The photo was posted on Facebook by Sosten Kipchumba.
Those who commented on the post castigated the motorcycle rider for risking the life of his passenger. Citing that if anything would happen then the outcome would be fatal as shown in the screenshot below.
Motorcycles are still the most popular means of transport in Kenya. Motorcycles provide an affordable means of transport and also provide income for motorcycle riders.

Another survey indicated that motorcycle riders in towns and cities can make 2500 shillings in a single day. Those who own a motorcycle and are leasing normally demand 400 on the same day. That means the rest of the cash belongs to the motorcycle rider.
This comes at a time when there are increasing accidents related to motorcycle riders. The latest statistics from the transport and safety authority show that motorcycles are the main cause of accidents in Kenya compared to motor vehicles. In 2019 alone, more than 1400 people lost their lives due to motorcycle accidents. While around 1000 died due to motor vehicle-related accidents.
