Prepare For Heavy Rains in the Next 7 Days if You Live in the Following Counties


The Kenya Meteorological Department is mandated to provide accessible climatological and meteorological information to the general public. Weather forecasting from the meteorological department provides an early warning on the expected weather changes and this is essential in saving life, protection of property and the conservation of the natural environment. The company has managed this through the development of an efficient telecommunications system for rapid collection and dissemination of meteorological information. This is in accordance with the World Meteorological Organization as it facilitate the infusion of scientific knowledge among the citizens of Kenya. This has promoted the utilization of natural resources for national development.


We are almost in the middle of the month of April and in the last few days, heavy rains have been experienced in several parts of the country. The Month of April is a rainy month with cloudy and cold conditions over a few areas. The Kenya Meteorological Department working closely with the Ministry of Environment and Forestry has released a seven day forecast valid from 13th to 19th April 2021. According to the forecast, rainfall is expected over several parts of the country with isolated storms occurring in the Lake Victoria Basin, The Highlands West of the Rift Valley, Central and South Rift Valley, The Highlands East of the Rift Valley including Nairobi County and the South Eastern Lowlands.


Detailed regional forecast for the next Seven Days ( 13th to 19th April 2021).


1.The Lake Victoria Basin, The Highlands West of the Rift Valley and the Central and South Rift Valley.[ Siaya, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo Marakwet, Baringo, Busia, Nandi, Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma Counties]

The residents of these counties should be set for morning rains during the first half of the forecast period. Afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms are likely to be experienced in the above areas during the forecast period.

2.The Highlands East of the Rift Valley.[Nyandarua, Nyeri, Muranga, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka, Kirinyaga and Nairobi Counties].

These areas are likely to experience occasional morning rains and afternoon showers during the forecast period. There is also a likelyhood of evening showers being experienced over a few places during the forecast period.

3.The South Eastern Lowlands.[ Kajiado, Kitui, Makueni, Machakos and Taita Taveta Counties].

Most of the morning rains are likely to experience sunny intervals while some areas are likely to experience occasional rains during the morning hours. Afternoon and evening showers are also likely to be experienced over a few places during the forecast period.

4.The Coastal Strip.[Mombasa, Tana River, Kilifi, Lamu and Kwale counties].

The residents of these counties should be prepared for occasional morning and afternoon showers over a few places during the forecast period.

This forecast is essential in aiding in the mitigation of adverse effects associated with severe weather and extreme climatic conditions. The residents of the above counties are therefore advised to be keen on the disruption of businesses and transportation associated with heavy rains. This comes a time when rains have affected various operations in Kenya hence people should be alert on this.
