Two Isiolo Boys Die Instantly After Mistaking Hand Grenade For Football

A sombre mood has engulfed Matarba village, Merti Sub-County, Isiolo after two boys, aged seven and eight died, instantly after they started playing with hand grenade thinking it was a ball.

Police in Isiolo are now investigating the source of the hand grenade before tracking the culprits. Police reports indicate that the boys were playing outside the home of Dabaso Huka Golicha when an explosion was heard at around 5 pm on Tuesday.

Residents who spoke to the press said that it was unclear if the boys collected the grenade by the roadside and carried it home or it could have been placed strategically targeting Huka's family. Others suspect it could have been dropped by suspects who were escaping police dragnet on February 21, 2021.

“We suspect the criminals dropped several while escaping and call for a thorough search of the area so that we prevent any future deaths,” a resident stated as quoted by a local media house.

Isiolo County Commissioner Geoffrey Omoding confirmed the incident and assured the public that investigations are ongoing. He asked the residents to be alert and inform the police whenever they come across suspicious devices.
