A middle-aged man believed to be an eyewitness has today survived lynching by an irate mob consisting of boda-boda riders in Shanzu, Mombasa County.

In a video that has since gone viral on various social media platforms, the young man is seen being surrounded by a mob who are threatening to set him ablaze, after he was suspected to have snatched a pouch from a woman at Shanzu stage.

According to a source who first shared the video, the young man was accosted by boda-boda riders who allegedly mistook him to be the suspected thief.

“It happened that the victim was passing by at the moment a woman’s purse was snatched at Shanzu stage. In the commotion, the man took off, making passerby mistakenly suspecting him to be the thief,” an eyewitness said.

His pleas to the angry mob seemed to be falling on cold shoulders as no one first wanted to hear is story.

“They demanded that he produces the woman’s pouch or the thief if indeed he was not the one,” continued the source.

He was nearly set ablaze with a tire that had already been made available and at some point even forced to put his head inside the tire so that he can be set on fire.

The suspect however, escaped death narrowly after some members of the mob decided to frog match him to a police station instead.

Do you believe mob justice is an ideal solution to eliminating criminals? If so, how can they determine an innocent person from a culprit?
