Zakayo Ruth, a 40-year-old man, has been killed by members of the public after confessing to the hack murders of two of his neighbors' children, aged four and 10. Ruth had been hiding since committing the alleged crime last Thursday.
According to Kiomo Chief Benedeta Wamuo, Ruth pleaded with residents to direct him to the chief's homestead, claiming he was starving. When the residents called the father of the children, he confirmed that Ruth was the suspect in the murder case. Upon confessing, members of the public killed Ruth on the spot.
Wamuo stated that Ruth's initial plan was to hack the head of the family, whom he claimed had been grazing on his land.
However, when he went looking for the man, he found the man's wife and children instead and attacked them. The wife is currently receiving treatment at the Machakos Level 5 Hospital and is in the intensive care unit.
Muthui Maluki, the father of the children, has called on leaders and well-wishers to assist with burial preparations and the accumulating hospital bills. Maluki, who is unemployed and relies on menial jobs for survival, stated that Ruth was not a social person and was a loner. The body has been moved to the Mwingi Level 4 Hospital mortuary.
