Coronavirus disease started in China in Wuhan City in late 2019. The disease led to thousands of deaths in China before it spread to other countries. So far, data compiled daily by Johns Hopkins University indicates that more than 206,613,680 people have been confirmed infected worldwide with fatalities reaching 4,353,844.
Kenya has been struggling to combat the virus since the first case was reported in mid-March last year (2020). According to the statistics from the Ministry of Health headed by Mutahi Kagwe, a total of 218,713 cases have been confirmed from cumulative tests of 2,239,082.
Today, 1,437 new infections were recorded from a sample size of 10,764. The positivity rate stands at 13.4 percent. What is worrying is that demises from this virus keep on rising every day after another 29 people succumbed increasing the total fatalities to 4,302.
Remember in the last one week Nairobi County has been leading in terms of cases. Today it led with 496, Nakuru 139, Kiambu 101 and Mombasa 100.
In my opinion, the government should think of imposing lockdown restrictions in these areas to control further spread. If the covid-19 spike will continue then the country's health facilities might be overwhelmed.
