Facts About Kenya's SGR

Kenya completed the construction of it's first standard gauge railway in 2017 after being under construction for a period of over 5 good years, the SGR runs from the sea port of Mombasa to Naivasha vie Nairobi and it is popularly known as the Madaraka express.

It costed the government of Kenya a total of 3.6 billion Kenya shillings which was taken as a loan from China who were also the contractors, it is so far considered as the most expensive infrustructure project in Kenya so far since independence, it covers a total distance of more than 500 kilometers.

The Madaraka express SGR was built with a main purpose of transporting container cargos from the port of Mombasa to the inland ports of Nairobi and Naivasha, it was also meant to help decongest Mombasa road by transporting passengers from Nairobi to Mombasa at a relatively low cost of around 1 000 shillings.
