Otieno, 11 years old, and his schoolmates are reported to have gone to fetch water from the beach of Lake Victoria before the dangerous hippo landed on his thigh and abdomen wounding him badly.
Suba Sub County Beach Management Unit chairperson, Mr William Onditi confirmed that Otieno was attacked by the hippo when he went to fetch water on the shores of Nyandiwa beach. Mr Onditi also said it was by chance that the minor managed to escape after the hippo grabbed him at the thigh.
Thanks to his friends who raised an alarm promoting nearby fishermen to immediately come to his rescue.
According to Mr Onditi, the grade 3 pupil was first hurried to a health centre within Nyandiwa trading centre for first aid before they transferred him to St Camillus Hospital in a critical condition that he could not talk or eat.
The beach elder instructed parents to not send their children to the lake to fetch water. He said that it was perilous because the water level has continued to rise on several beaches around the lake.
