A multi-agency security team manning a roadblock at Archer’s post on Tuesday have arrested a 21-year-old man transporting bhang worth KSh 855,000 in a vehicle.

The 19 kilograms of bhang estimated to have a street value of Sh855, 000 were packed in polythene bags of a kilo each and hidden in a compartment under the driver’s seat.

Isiolo County Police commander Joseph Kigen said the vehicle that had five students on board was headed to Nairobi from Marsabit. The vehicle was intercepted by police leading to the arrest of the driver.

“Our officers used sniffer dogs after suspecting that the vehicle had narcotics,” said Mr Kigen.

He urged police officers manning roadblocks along the Moyale-Isiolo road to be more vigilant in their inspection exercises to ensure an end to drug trafficking in the region.

“We are glad that in recent past, cases of drug trafficking have reduced because of the commendable work the officers are doing on the road,” he said.

Accompanied by County Criminal Investigation Officer (CCIO) Ms Betty Chepng’eno, the police boss said security organs were fully committed to deal with drug use and trafficking which had ruined lives of many youths in the area.

“It is unfortunate that young people are being used to transport narcotics that are harmful,” Mr Kigen told journalists at the DCI offices in Isiolo town.

Mr Kigen appealed to residents to volunteer information that could lead to the arrest of criminals involved in drug business.

The suspect will be arraigned on Wednesday and charged with drug trafficking.
