Prepare for Heavy Rains in the Next 7 Days if You Live in the Following Counties


The new month has started off on a high note as cool and cloudy conditions are experienced in several parts of the country. The Kenya Meteorological Department has been working hard to provide accessible meteorological and climatological information services which is essential for the promotion of sustainable development in the country. This has promoted the utilization of natural resources for national and regional development.


The updates from KMD have been very useful to the majority of Kenyans as the early warning on the changing weather patterns have helped in the mitigation of adverse impacts of severe weather and extreme climatic conditions. The company has managed this through the creation of an efficient telecommunications system for rapid collection and dissemination of meteorological information in accordance to the World Meteorological Organization WMO.


The Kenya Meteorological Department working closely with the Ministry of Environment and Forestry has provided weather forecasting updates whose validity ranges from 3rd to 9th August 2021. According to the forecast, Rainfall is expected over several places in the Highlands West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, the South and Central Rift Valley and the Highlands East of the Rift Valley. The above areas are likely to experience isolated storms during the forecast period which is 7 days.


Most parts are likely to experience cool and cloudy conditions which is accompanied by occasional light rains.

Detailed regional forecast from 3rd to 9th August


1.The Lake Victoria Basin, the Highlands West of the Rift Valley, Central and South Rift Valley; [Siaya, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo- Marakwet, Nandi, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Busia, Baringo, Nakuru, Narok and Laikipia Counties],

There is a chance of morning rains over a few places with cold and cloudy conditions accompanied with sunny intervals. Afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms are also expected during the forecast period.

2.The Highlands East of the Rift Valley including Nairobi County; [Nyandarua, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Muranga, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka and Nairobi Counties],

The residents of the above areas should be ready for cold and cloudy conditions accompanied with occasional light rains especially in the morning hours.

Afternoon showers are also expected with partly cloudy conditions at night in some few places whereas some areas might experience light rains.

3.The South Eastern Lowlands; [Machakos, Kitui, Makueni, Kajiado and Taita Taveta Counties],

The mornings are likely to experience cold and cloudy conditions while the afternoons are likely to be sunny.


The rains are likely to cause disruptions in transportation and businesses activities. KMD has enhanced protection of property, saving lives and the protection of the environment.
