Emotional Scenes at Busia ‘Murdered’ Nurse Burial

Today was a gloomy day in Busia as family and friends laid to rest Nurse Anna Achieng’ Mung'ayo who was brutally murdered by armed assailants on 12th September 2021.

Achieng’ aged 60 years met her death while returning home from a conference in Arusha, Tanzania. According to Busia County Government, Achieng’ was killed between 9 A.M. and 1.00 P.M. at her home for unknown reasons. The robbers also made away with some property from the house.

The former health worker was employed nurse in-charge of the renal unity at Busia County Referral Hospital. The renal unit is a department dedicated towards patients with kidney diseases who may also require dialysis. Statistics from the Ministry of Health indicate that roughly 5 million people are living with kidney problems in Kenya. Death of the nephrology nurse will therefore be a big blow to patient care at the facility.

Many leaders attended the burial including Busia Deputy Governor, H.E Moses Mulomi, First Lady Judy Ojaamong, Chief Officers: Jonathan Ino (medical services), Lydia Nabwire (ICT and Communication), Eng. Richard Achiambo),Chair CPSB Assumpta Obore, Directors Dr Janerose Ambuchi (Medical Services), Melsa Lutomia (Public Health) and former Funyula MP, Dr Paul Otuoma.

Earlier on, locals had said the attack was motivated by high level of insecurity in the region and requested for law enforcers to tighten the grip.
