Martha Wanjiru, Land Lady who waived January tent for her tenants was rejected by her family at 17

In December 2022, Martha Wanjiru, a Kenyan living in Germany, gained notoriety by waiving rent for her apartment's residents

.

Wanjiru invited her tenants to a modest gathering where they could eat, mingle, and watch the World Cup final.

But the good-natured landlady had a difficult life; when she was 17, her family deserted her, and she was saved by a preacher and her future husband.

Below is Wanjiru's tale.

Difficult upbringing

Even though Wanjiru has changed the lives of others, she experienced a difficult childhood.

At age 17, the entrepreneur was kicked out of her parents' house and was forced to live on the streets.

She started selling cockroach insecticides while she was there in an effort to make ends meet.

Because I had nowhere to go, Wanjiru recalled, "I ended up living on the streets for almost five months, selling cockroach insecticide to make ends meet."

She had a tight relationship with her brother at the time, who would pay her frequent visits and offer her cash for spending on herself.

Heaven's best husband

Later, after relocating to Kayole, Wanjiru met a preacher who offered to help her.

She spent some time in Kayole before moving to Mombasa, where a friend had agreed to assist her in finding a waitressing position.

In an effort to better her life and the life of her child, Wanjiru worked as a waitress for a while before landing another job as a barmaid.

She met her husband when she was still in Mombasa, and he was moved by her story and volunteered to assist her.

"By the grace of God, I met someone who wished to assist me in meeting my spouse. He asked if my belongings had been taken the first time he came to my residence, she recounted.

A move to Germany

Wanjiru relocated back to Nairobi with the aid of her German partner, where she enrolled in Goethe Institute's German classes.

The entrepreneur ran a business while living in Nairobi, producing yogurt items that she distributed to schools.

Before moving to Germany after finishing her German classes, Wanjiru made peace with her family.

Tragically, she was involved in a car accident after being hit by a bus and spent two months bedridden.

Nevertheless, Wanjiru got back on her feet, and shortly after that, she and her daughter Njeri moved to Germany.

Although she currently works in insurance with her spouse, she pursued a career in aviation in Germany.

Nice landlord

Argentina and France were playing in the World Cup finals on December 18, 2022.

In Rongai, Kajiado County, Wanjiru, the owner of 15 one-bedroom apartments, hosted a small gathering for her tenants.

Wanjiru then declared her decision to waive the entire January rent of Ksh 150,000 prior to the small ceremony.

They weren't expecting it, so I decided that we would cook together, have dinner together, and watch the World Cup. I believed they had already paid for the entire year; I could see how I would manage in January," she stated.
