Packaging firm starts campaign to recycle cartoon

Packaging company Tetra Pak has started a campaign to recycle cartons to protect the environment.

The firm said the recycled material can be used to make benches, tiles, paper towels and dustbins, among other items. Tetra Pak has been running a campaign, Go Nature Go Carton, which was this year themed around recycling of cartons and tree planting.

"This means creating cartons that are fully made of renewable or recycled materials that are responsibly sourced, therefore helping protect and restore our planet's climate, resources and bio-diversity" said the company's Communication Manager Stella Ondimu during an event to announce the new initiative.

According to the World Bank, the world generates two billion tonnes of waste annually, but only 13.5 per cent of it is recycled. It is also projected that waste generation will grow to 34 billion tonnes by 2050. Nema Director General Mamo Boru said the environment is a collective and individual responsibility and there is need to accelerate recycling.

"We must take responsibility for the waste being littered because we are the generators," he said.

"The constitution gives us a right to live in a clean, healthy and secure environment. It also bestows responsibility on every citizen to enhance the quality of the environment." Mr Boru commended Tetra Pak for the initiative and urged other firms to follow suit in protecting the environment.
