Kenya Meteorological Department announces weather forecast for the next five days. According to report shared by the KMD not all places that will receive rains within the weather forecast period. However other places are likely to receive sunny intervals during this period. The social economic well-being of the country is very crucial to severe weather and extreme climate events. Kenya often experiences loss of lives and destruction of properties because of harsh weather conditions. This harsh weather conditions are floods, landslides, lightning and thunder storms and drought. All these once they occur they leave negative impacts to the community.
A large number of people living in villages within the country live below the poverty line, since rain-fed agriculture on which they rely for their livelihood has now become more and more sensitive to severe weather that is now prevalent. Skillful and timely weather forecasts can help the government and communities mitigate the negative impacts of severe weather events through proper planning.
Therefore the effectiveness of early warning largely depends on the organisations and mechanisms that control the response. The players could be the government or non governmental agencies although often it could be a combination of both. Kenya, a diverse county its climate and weather, needs both approaches.
Despite the existence of wide knowledge on the hazards that causes disasters among the Kenyan communities, disasters have continued to cause destruction, sometimes, leading to loss of lives in many communities. Year after year, the frequency and severity of such disasters have continued to rise. Therefore the remedy to these problems is early warning weather forecasting. This is provided by the Kenya Meteorological Department through different social media platforms.
