The passengers who were choir members of Mwingi Catholic Church were heading for a wedding in the Nuu area from Mwingi Town on Saturday before they were involved in the accident.
At least 24 people have died, and 12 others rescued after a bus they were travelling in plunged into River Enziu in Mwingi, Kitui county.
Kitui deputy governor Wathe Nzau said the driver of the bus that plunged into a river in Mwingi was unfamiliar with the route.The DG observed the driver attempted to steer the vehicle on an overtopped bridge despite being warned by locals.
"This afternoon tragedy has struck Kitui County. A bus carrying Catholic faithfuls was swept away while attempting to cross a swollen river Enziu in Nguni, Mwingi. Rescue efforts are ongoing. So far there are 17 survivors and regrettably 24 bodies have been recovered," she tweeted.
The accident has plunged Kitui County into grief. Two years ago, pupils at St. Gabriel School in Mwingi perished in yet another grissly accident. Kitui Senator Enock Wambua send a message to the bereaved family following the tragedy
