Over 14,000 prisoners released to decongest prisons

The public authority has delivered more than 14,000 detainees as a feature of the progressing project to decongest penitentiaries in the wake of an upsurge in Covid-19 cases.

Plans are in progress to deliver more from the prisons with the branch of remedial administrations working with the Judiciary and the Ministry of Health in containing the spread of the infection.

There are more than 40,000 detainees in the country's jail against a limit of 30,000.

Effectively, seven staff and another seven detainees from various penitentiaries the nation over have passed on of Covid-19 related entanglements.

This came as the jail division precluded immunizing the detainees in the country under the progressing immunization program.

As indicated by the Correctional Services Principal Secretary Zeinab Hussein, they had put every one of the vital measures set up to manage the third wave which had asserted many lives.

Talking in the wake of visiting Naivasha GK jail, Zeinab conceded that blockage was an issue yet rushed to take note of that this had been tended to.

"Since the pandemic was first announced in the country, we have delivered more than 14,000 detainees as a component of decongesting penitentiaries in accordance with Health Ministry orders," she said.
