The victims were travelling to Nduru Island in Mbita sub-county, when their boat capsized at around 6 pm. Four people were rescued, while four more are still missing.
According to area Chief, Ochogo Joshua, the boat had been loaded excessively, with luggage of more than 30 passengers and construction material. He stated that this could have been the reason for the sinking of the boat.
Homabay County Women representative, Honourable Gladys Wanga ,said that the stakeholders needed to put in more effort in the rescue operations.
Security agencies within the area, have directed boat owners to ensure that all passengers are given life jackets, inorder to enable them stay afloat and swim in the event that an emergency of similar nature occurs.
All boat owners have also been requested to register with relevant authorities.
