Nairobi Homes Worth Millions Razed Down in Fire

Property worth millions of shillings was destroyed in Kawangware 46 area in Nairobi County on Saturday, October 23, following a fire incident.

Neighbours reported that the fire could have been caused by a gas cylinder in one of the houses.

A witness narrated that a woman who was cooking had placed her gas cylinder next to her iron sheets before bursting into flames after overheating.

The fire quickly spread to neighbouring houses and residents had to try and contain using buckets of water.

The Nairobi Metropolitan Services' (NMS) were also swift to arrive at the scene of incident where they helped put out the fire.

Some of the residents narrated that they were only able to save their lives and no single property.

Area Nyumba Kumi elder James Karuri requested residents to be more careful when handling electric appliances and gas cylinders.

The incident came just days after 300 homes in the informal settlements of Mlango Kubwa in Mathare, Nairobi County, went up in flames. Two people were confirmed dead following the incident.

Residents disclosed that there was no enough water to put out the fire, hence, leading to its fast spread.
