Kenyan Government Bans Swimming in Beaches Beyond 5:30 Pm

Mining, Blue Economy and Maritime Affairs CS Salim Mvurya, 26th December, 2022 addressing the press.

The government has banned swimming in all public beaches beyond 5: 30 pm effective immediately, including lake Victoria and Indian ocean beaches.

Cs Mvurya added to that that persons who are drunk are banned from swimming.

Speaking at Kongo Beach in Kwale County, CS Mvurya said there is a multi-agency team from relevant agencies that has been instructed to enforce the ban in the Indian Ocean and Lake Victoria.

"Officers will start a crackdown on unseaworthy boats, enforce proper use of life jackets and inspect the jackets standards" CS Mvurya further warned.

The directives follows a tragedy that happened in Pirates beach in Mombasa that involved 11 family members that lead to 2 members dead after a boat capsized and one family member to be admitted in ICU.

CS Mvurya warns on unseaworthy vessels as he added that he is aware that because of large number of people, some may be tempted to use unseaworthy vessels to fill their pockets.
