Nyeri Deputy Governor Dr Caroline Karugu has called on the Ministry of Education in the county to provide dispensers in Public Primary and Secondary Schools in the country to ensure girls dispose their used sanitary pads safely.

Speaking at DEB Muslim Primary School in Nyeri, Karugu said that some public facilities have dispensers to dispose condoms but girls have been left out in proper hygiene. At the same time, she notes that 15 percent of girls in Nyeri County have no access to sanitary pads and they are going through a challenge of being misused by men sexually inorder to get money to purchase the commodity.

She noted that during the Covid-19 pandemic when the schools were closed, most of the girls who fell pregnant was as a result of sexual harrasment from men as some were looking for money to purchase the essentials.

Karugu was celebrating World Menstrual Hygiene Day where she distributed sanitary pads to more than 250 girls from needy families in Majengo and Witemere area in Nyeri Town.
