Politicians in attendance during the final send off of the slain athlete, Agnes Chebet Tirop, have strongly condemned Gender Based Violence.
While condoling with the family pf the late Tirop in her home in Mosoriot Nandi county where her burial ceremony took place, senator Murkomen asked parents to always accept their daughters back home when they run away from abusive husbands.
According to Murkomen, parents and society put a lot of pressure on their daughters to endure whatever they go through in their marriages.
“Parents, let’s not advice our daughters to stay and endure abusive marriages. Abusive husbands today have turned into murderers,” he said.
“We must stop this barbaric culture of urging people to stay in abusive marriages. Men also suffer from GBV they just are suffering in silence,” Murkomen added.
Nandi County governor, asked the government to appoint athletes to be ambassadors of Kenya in other countries saying that they fly the Kenyan flag high daily and deserves it.
Governor Sang promised the family that he will ensure that justice get served.
“The hand of the law must take it course and justice will be served tp our late Tirop. All her wealth must also be returned to her parents,” Sang said.
Senator Samson Cherangei who represents the Nandi county, condemned GNV promising to be at the forefront in pushing for a center for social support for athletes.
The late Tirop was found murdered in her Iten home a week ago. The main suspect her husband, Ibrahim Rotich was arrested a few days later in Mombasa as he tried to flee the country.
Tirop was mourned as a dedicated athlete who represented her country Kenya well in the athletics arena and brought home several medals.
May her soul rest in perfect peace.
