A village in Kakamega County is in tears after a man burned his 89-year-old grandmother's body beyond recognition over elderly cash stipend.
The grandmother, identified as Floice Lisero lost her life in the fire which gutted her whole house in Eshitimba area, Khusiku sub-location, Khwisero sub-county on Monday night.
The accused said to be in his early 40s, reportedly attacked his grandmother after she refused his request for the cash.
When she refused to give him the cash he got angry and slashed down banana stems before cutting other crops in the homestead.
Neighbours intervened and detained him in his house.
The suspect is believed to be a drug abuser, which made him to act wickedly.
Khwisero sub-county police boss Samuel Kogo said the accused, was saved by police officers after villagers attempted to subject him to mob justice at Ebukambuli market, as he escaped from the village.
The police commander took issue with family members for not rescuing the grandmother who was staying with her killer grandson.
He said preliminary facts showed that the accused person had been abusing drugs.
Ms Mary Okiso, 70, the first-born daughter of the deceased told the press that the suspect had killed her mother after he asked her for money.
She said the man believed that her grandmother, a beneficiary of the Cash transfer initiative had gotten some cash after the village elder checked her home and told her that the government had disbursed the money to be paid to elderly.
The body of the deceased was transferred to the hospital mortuary awaiting postmortem.
