How Sugar And Rice Worth Millions Were Stolen From Port Of Mombasa

Anti-corruption agency official has told the Court how port and Customs staff conspired to defraud the country Ksh106 million in the duty at the port of Mombasa.

Ethics and anti-corruption commission officer Jarson Dida told Mombasa chief magistrate Francis Kyambia that the employees of the Kenya Port Authority and the Kenya revenue authority conspired snake 124 containers stuffed with sugar and rice out of the port.

Mr Dida testified that,11 Kenya Port Authority and 6 Kenyan revenue authority staff, who have since been sacked, as well as 15 other suspects accused of stealing containers between May 1st and August 3 third 2016 used the password of two retired Kenya Port Authority employees to the sneak goods out of the port.

Former senior Ports ICT manager Fatma Nabhany is accused of failing to deactivate the passwords of the former Kenya Port Authority employees Rose Makau and Florence Lagat,which were used in the theft.

Dida told the court that there was a time when Kenya Port Authority's KWATSO System and the Kenya revenue authority's Simba system was interfered with to block the communication between the two agencies to facilitate manual documentation for clearance of the containers and this was the time divert goods.

Dida also said some of the sugar and rice was traced to a warehouse outside the port, which resulted in the arrest of company's directors suspected to be involved in the theft.
