Police in Bungoma have seized a long distance truck ferrying 489 of 50 Kgs contraband sugar from Uganda.
Officers from the department of Criminal Investigation also arrested three people in connection with the illegal trade.
The contraband sugar had illegally been smaggled into the country through the porous Kenya-Uganda border and the suspects were using the ungazetted routes to sneak the commodity to Nakuru.
"The vehicle carrying the contraband sugar was seized by our officers at Sio area in Kanduyi constituency after a tipoff as the three people on board were trying to use the Panya route that connects Kanduyi-Chwele-Kimilili to Kitale," said Macharia.
He stated that after a tipoff from the public, the officers swung into action and arrested the suspects plus the vehicle ferrying the illegal commodities.
"The Multi Agency security team is already on the ground, including Kenya Revenue Authority, DCI, Customs and others to establish how the commodity was smuggled into the country," said the Sub County DCI.
He stated that the trio will be arraigned in court once investigations have been completed as the vehicle is being held at Bungoma Police Station.
This comes just a week after members of the public engaged police on Kakamega-Kisumu highway as they tried to rescue an arrested truck also seized from some businessman.
The 10 suspects were charged in a Kakamega court for trying to stop police from arresting the truck.
The deadly confrontation was thwarted after armed police officers overpowered the members of the public.
They denied denied a raft of charges which ranged from trying to obstruct police officers, assaulting an officer and conspiracy to defeat justice.
The suspects were freed on a cash bail of Sh20,000 with a surety of Sh100,000 according to the Standard Newspapers on Wednesday.
Investigations showed that the truck loaded with 400 bags of 50Kgs sugar was smuggled into the country through Busia border.
"The goods were held for three days at Chwele police station in Bungoma County and was being escorted to Kisumu on Sunday 19 to the regional KRA centre for estimation when the suspects using their motorbikes blocked the road at Makunga to stop the truck from proceeding to it's destination," read a report.
