More police officers die by their own hand than are killed in the line of duty. Cases of suicide among police officers are common in Kenya, with some officers resorting to killing themselves and their spouses.
Police are investigating an incident where a senior police officer committed suicide inside his house.
Gitonga, based at Mitunguu police station, reportedly hanged himself using a bag carrier belt.
Police who visited the scene found the officer hanging in the bathroom.
Homicide detectives processed the scene and confirmed that there was no suicide note left by the officer. In addition, the police noted that there were no visible injuries on the deceased officer's body.
It is alleged Gitonga had a pending case of assault and was declared a deserter since December 2021.
The officer's body was taken to the morgue awaiting an autopsy.
