The Department of Transport has temporarily restricted transit vehicles or matatu vehicles from using the Nairobi Expressway.
This follows what the Minister calls private road safety incidents and road accidents.
Since the Nairobi Expressway was opened to the public, a number of road accidents and incidents involving commercial vehicles have taken place on this road.
They need to be investigated for the cause of these accidents and incidents, in order to promote appropriate safety interventions and to ensure that passenger vehicles use the road safely, the department said in a statement signed by Transport Cabinet Secretary James Macharia.
Other measures taken to strengthen road safety include the installation of speed bumps when approaching approaching toll gates.
In addition, the Department says speed limits will be used when installing speed cameras on the roadway to improve compliance with speed limits.
The department also said traffic officers would be stationed at various points along the road, including toll stations.
