Several pedestrians and hawkers were injured after debris fell from a building under construction at the Central Business District (CBD) located near Koja roundabout, Nairobi.
In a statement issued by St John's Ambulance, a rescue team was dispatched to the site in a bid to offer First Aid services.
"A number of pedestrians and hawkers have been injured with some cars damaged after stones and debris falling from a building under construction came pouring down into the street at the Junction from Koja roundabout, near Sanford Chips place, Nairobi.'' Statement read in part.
Kenyans online wished quick recovery to the injured victims while also castigating the contractor for the incident.
Others urged Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja to investigate the safety of the building.
"Sakaja send some of your guys here to investigate this building. If they look closely they will find that the building has been extended onto the pavement," Elizabeth Wambui noted.
In February 2023, Nairobi County Government listed six estates that would undergo an audit to ensure the safety of tenants. The estates included Pipeline, Tassia, Kayole, Dandora, Mwiki, Dagoretti and other areas within the named locations.
Nairobi County's Built Environment and Urban Planning Chief Officer, Patrick Analo, affirmed that different stakeholders would be involved in the exercise.
According to Analo, the team would also be tasked with establishing if the materials used to construct different apartments met the required standards.
The findings would determine whether the buildings will be demolished or given directives to repair them.
"Those that will meet the minimum requirements standards of building code and other requirements will be given approval under the framework of regularisation. Those that will not meet the structural integrity will be advised accordingly including adjustments and modification or even demolition," Analo stated.
