Ogembo Town, one of the rapidly growing Urban centers of Kisii County has joined the list of the few towns in the country that have attained municipality status after it was today 3rd January, 2023 awarded with a Municipal Charter.
Led by Kisii Governor Simba Arati, Ogembo Town was today upgraded to its new status thus becoming the second town in Kisii County to receive the Charter after Kisii Town. While officially handing over the Charter, Arati emphasized the need for more towns in Kisii County to be elevated to a better status so that more developments may reach the residents.
"As part of my administration's urban development strategy, we are set to upgrade more urban areas in the county, through improved service delivery and the provision 0f modern structures and amenities," Said Arati.
Now, according to the Urban Areas and Cities Act 2011, an urban center qualifies for a municipality charter if its population is at least 70,000 and 249,000 residents. Also, the urban center must have a well-laid-out development plan that will be used as a blueprint for its growth, have enough space for expansion, and Must demonstrate its capacity to generate enough revenue for its growth and other activities.
Once upgraded to Municipality status, it means the urban center will get additional funding, more developments, and improved services. Additionally, new management to lead the municipality is brought in for efficient delivery of services.
