Kenya Red Cross Express Fears Over Possible Famine In Northeastern And Floods Around Lake Region

Kenya Red Cross has expressed its fears over possibilities of hunger in the Northeastern part of Kenya. It has reported that, counties like Mandera, Wajir and Turkana are likely to experience famine due to dry climatic conditions. This comes following a long period of drought that in North Eastern parts of Kenya. Counties in this areas suffered water shortages, death of livestock and outbreak of diseases.

North Eastern counties have been affected by desert locust invasion hence being at arisk of suffering food shortages.

Red Cross has reported that the population likely to be affected by the projected famine, is close to 1.4 million.This has made it necessary for Red Cross to plan on how they can provide the affected groups with relief food. Red Cross has been seen planning on how they will supply the Nort Eastern counties with more food if the situation worsens.

Red Cross has warned that areas likely to be affected by floods especially those near large water bodies also need to be budgeted for. Red Cross has projected that there are possibilities of floods being experienced around Lake Victoria. It has stated there is need to put in place measures to address the problem if it arise. Residents around the lake might be displaced from their homes due to the floods hence there is need for camps and food supply.

They have also said that many families are having children who are malnourished and that there is need to supply them with necessary foodstuffs to keep them health.
