Bodaboda Riders Link Area Sub Chief With Motorbike Theft In Meru

Angry Boda Boda riders in Antubetwe Kiongo Location, Igembe North Sub County in Meru County have caused havoc at Antubetwe Kiongo market following uncontrolled theft of their motorcycles. The angry mob comprising of boda boda riders and other residents of Antubetwe Kiongo market blocked all roads linking the market to its outskirts including the Antubetwe Kiongo-Laare road, Antubetwe Kiongo-Mutuati road and the one linking the market to Maua Town.

The protests began in the afternoon of 19th April 2021 after a member of LATUMAMU Boda Boda SACCO reported to his leaders that his stolen motorbike had been seen at Mutuati market. For a long period of time, motorcycles stolen from Antubetwe Kiongo have always been recovered from Mutuati which is a neighbouring market.

Upon approaching the person who was riding the stolen motorbike, the owner reports that he was threatened with a gun hence running for his life. Earlier on, the owner had approached Miriki Sub Chief Mr. Benard to help him recover his motorbike but the administrative leader asked for Ksh. 10,000 so that he can show the owner of the motorbike where his motorbike was.

Mr. Gikundi who is the owner of the motorbike told his fellow riders about what transpired between him and the area Sub Chief something that awakened the demons of the riders. Immediately, they started baying for the blood of the chief claiming that Mr. Benard, the area Sub Chief was the one conspiring with the thieves to steal their motorcycles.

The area Assistant County Commissioner Mr. Ngetich pleaded with the riders to cool down their tempers and the promised them that the administrative leader involved in the matter shall be reprimanded and forced to pay the lost motorbike.
