Latest Updates From Buruburu Fire Outbreak

At least 59 students were rushed to Metropolitan Hospital on Sunday evening following a fire incident at Buruburu Girls in Nairobi.

Some of the students were treated and discharged. The rest, this writer understands, are in a stable condition.

“Our team of trauma and emergency medicine have stabilized and discharged a total of 30 students already. We remain committed to the safety of our communities,” the Metropolitan Hospital said.

Several shocking videos shared by passers-by on social media showed schoolgirls screaming to get out of their multi-story dorms safely as smoke enveloped the building.Mwangangi claimed that people trying to enter the school to help students were blocked by security forces.

The fire department reacted immediately and was able to put out the fire. Buruburu Police Commander Francis Kamau confirmed the incident and said the cause of the fire, which started around 5:00 pm, is not clear.

“There are officials and firefighters at the school, but it is too early to know what happened and how much damage was done,” the police chief told the newspaper.
