A tragic accident occurred at Gilgil near st. Mary's hospital on the Nairobi-Nakuru highway. Nine people tragically died on the spot and six accident victims were badly injured. Eye-witnesses say that the matatu collided head-with a transit vehicle.
Police reports indicate that the Public Service Vehicle (PSV) was carrying excess passengers something that might have contributed to the accident that took place at around six in the morning. The Matatu was heading toward Nairobi while the transit was heading towards Nakuru.
It is alleged that the transit lorry driver tried to overtake another vehicle before slamming the Matatu. The police have summoned the management of the Matatu Sacco to record a statement to explain why they defied the Covid 19 rules by carrying excess passengers. Mr. Onditi the Gilgil police boss has confirmed the occurrence of the accident and assured the public that investigations are underway to determine the exact cause of the accident.
The survivors of the accident are receiving treatments st. Mary's hospital, the body of those who succumbed to the injuries from the accident were taken to the morgue waiting to be identified by family and friends
