The Time When David Had To Act Like A Madman In Order To Save His Life From Danger

There are times in life when we are faced with circumstances that seem to be out of our control. We may act abnormally to rid ourselves from some problems or situations that would otherwise harm us. However, while we struggle to save ourselves in our own wisdom, we fail to acknowledge the power of God to save us from situations that overwhelm us.

In the Bible, David was also a victim of this.

1 Samuel 21:10-13

[10]David arose and fled that day from Saul and went to Achish king of Gath.

[11]The servants of Achish said to him, Is not this David, the king of the land? Did they not sing one to another of him in their dances: Saul has slain his thousands, and David his ten thousands?

[12]David took these words to heart and was much afraid of Achish king of Gath.

[13]And he changed his behavior before them, and pretended to be insane in their [Philistine] hands, and scribbled on the gate doors, and drooled on his beard.

David was escaping from Saul who was pursuing him and he sought refuge in Gath. He wanted Achish to allow him to live peacefully in Gath. However, David heard what Achish’s officials were saying and became too afraid to meet Achish. Therefore, David made up a clever scheme to protect himself. He pretended that his mind was ill and acted as if he could not control his own behaviour.

On seeing David in that condition, Achish was angry at his officials. He did not believe that David was Israel’s king. Thinking that his officials were wasting his time, he dismissed David who eventually escaped safely.

What can we learn from David's story?

1. We should put our trust in God

David had done nothing wrong. Saul was only jealous of him and sought to kill him. While he was trying to save his life, he might have been killed had Achish known his trick. He should have trusted God more. Likewise, we ought to put our trust in God who is able to save his people in every situation. David had acted foolishly, but God still saved him.

Do you trust that you can defeat the enemy alone? Safety is not in how clever you are or how strong you are. Safety is found in God.
