8 GMO Animals And Plants That Scientists Have Produce In Some Countries (Photos)

A genetically Modified Organism is any organism whose genetic material has been altered using genetic engineering techniques. Genes have been transferred within the same species, across species, and even across the kingdoms. New genes can be introduced, altered, or knocked out. The purpose is to produce crops that are resistant to certain chemical treatments. Here are six crops that have been modified.

1. Bananas

GMO bananas are resistant to fusarium wilt that has been attacking plantations across the globe. They possess high lodging resistance, optimum photosynthesis, and efficient water absorption. It helps to increase nutritional value thus could contribute to food security.

2. Maize

This GMO maize is resistant to armyworm attacks and incidences of aflatoxin outbreaks. They can tolerate drought and mature in less than two months. There is also an increase in harvest by 60% and grains are of high quality.

3. Carrots

The species increase their calcium absorption by 41% over standard carrots. It also provides farmers with a certain type of pest resistance thus reducing the cost of production.

4. Potatoes

New GMO potatoes have been altered to produce lower levels of acrylamide when cooked. The genes that cause the damage when bruise has been silenced so it can not be expressed.

5. Tomatoes

The purple-coloured GMO tomato is rich in anti-oxidants and may protect people from cancer, diabetes and heart ailments. It has genes from the snapdragon plant that give it a purple colour but still have some nutritional value as regular ones.

6. Bell pepper

It has an aromatic taste and a high concentration of vitamin C and carotenoids. Some have a high level of capsaicin that makes it very hot.

7. Pumpkins

Scientists have selectively bred the largest pumpkins that have double and normal numbers of chromosomes. It helps to improve shape, size and heartimess.

8. Featherless Chicken

Researchers in Israel produced featherless chickens that grow faster, and their meat is low fat. They carry a recessive mutation that causes a lack of feathers, as well as foot scales and spurs.
