Science: What Holds Earth Suspended And Firm In Space

Probably every photo or model you've seen of Earth clearly depicts it as a floating object trough space. The same applies to other planets and heavenly bodies and the obvious mystery you must have asked yourself is what really holds these objects suspended there orbiting the sun year in year out? Well, scientist were also for the longest time trying to find the answers to these questions till finally Albert Einstein defined the theory of relativity to explain how the universe works. Let me teach you some Physics Lingo!

Fabric Of Space and Time

In physics, spacetime is a mathematical model which fuses the three dimensions of space and the one dimension of time into a single four-dimensional manifold. Time and space, according to Einstein's theories of relativity, are woven together, forming a four-dimensional fabric called "space-time" that earth and other heavenly bodies lie on. The mass of Earth dimples this fabric, much like a heavy person sitting in the middle of a trampoline.

The 'dimple' earth makes on the space-time fabric is what is responsible for gravity. Here's how, anything that comes close enough to earth falls into this 'dimple' straight to the center of the earth since it's nolonger being held by space-time. What is gravity? Gravity is the force by which a planet or other body draws objects toward its center.

Putting it all together

The space-time fabric also holds the sun but it being extremely massive, it dimples the Fabric even more.The sun displaces soo much room on space-time that all solar planets fall inside it's "dimple".That's why the sun exerts gravitational pull on bodies around it including Earth and other planets.

The sun's gravity keeps Earth in orbit around it holding it in place. keeping us at a comfortable distance to enjoy the sun's light and warmth. Earth's gravity holds down our atmosphere and the air we need to breathe. It also holds our moon in place. So while the Fabric of Space-time suspends bodies in space, the sun's gravity pulls keeping planets trapped in an orbit around the sun. Makes sense?
