The fifth commandment in the bible is the only commandment with a promise in it. "Honour your father and mother that it may go well with you and that you may live long in the land." The ten commandments were given to Moses on Mount Sinai to the people of Israel, the chosen people of God as a guidance and in order to keep themselves righteous.
The bible advises us to honour our fathers and mothers so that it may go well with us and furthermore it gives us a promise, that we may live long. Probably the bible literally gives us the real secret of living long in the world. The ten commandments appear twice in the bible, first it appears in Exodus 20:2-17 and Deuteronomy 5:6-21.
The fifth commandment has got two parts, the first part which is the general statement while the second part contains the promise, the reward that one gets after accomplishing the first part of the commandment. Therefore honouring our parents is one of the greatest things that one can commit to because there is a reward after that. It the fifth commandment is certainly the only commandment with a promise in it.
