Why January Is Called January

The year 2022 is coming to an end. As we usher in 2023 January will be the first month. Many Kenyans refer to it as 'njaanuary' this is because of the financial burden that comes with the month. Schools reopen during this month, this means that fees will be required. With many spending their money during Christmas holidays this is the month of taking that 'kaloan mahali'.

However the name January originated from Rome. It was derived from their god called Janus. Janus presided over doors and gates. He was referred to as the beginning and the ending, the rising and setting of the sun.

Also Janus was a two faced god because of this they believed he could see the past and the future. His name in Latin means doorway. This explains why it is the first month of the year.

As we end this year let us not forget to plan for the coming year. Happy new year to all of you.
