What Does the Bible Say About Homosexuality?

Genesis 2:24, in the Christian Bible, shows that God intended for marriage to be between a man and a woman. In Matthew 19:5, Jesus quotes Genesis 2:24 to uphold God’s intention. Paul also quotes the same verse in Ephesians 5:31. Any sexual act that occurs outside of Genesis 2:24’s context is viewed as sexual immorality.

Homosexuality is one of the sexual acts that are treated as sinful. This practice is highly condemned several times in the Bible, and here are the specific chapters and verses that mention this controversial act. (All quotes are taken from the Good News Bible version).

1.    Genesis 19: The Sinfulness of Sodom

Genesis 19 shows how the men of Sodom were struck with blindness for wanting to engage in homosexual acts with the angels, who had come to visit lot. In addition, the Lord destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah by raining down burning sulphur, because of the terrible accusations raised against the two cities.

2.    Leviticus 18:22

“No man is to have sexual relations with another man; God hates that.”

3.    Leviticus 20:13

“If a man has sexual relations with another man, they have done a disgusting thing, and both shall be put to death. They are responsible for their own death.”

4.    1 Corinthians 6:9-10

“Surely you know that the wicked will not possess God’s kingdom. Do not fool yourselves; people who are immoral or who worship idols or are adulterers or homosexual perverts or who steal or are greedy or are drunkards or who slander others or are thieves – none of these will possess God’s kingdom”.

5.    1 Timothy 1:9-10

“It must be remembered, of course, that laws are made, not for good people, but for law breakers and criminals, for the godless and sinful, for those who are not religious or spiritual, for those who kill their fathers or mothers, for murderers, for the immoral, for sexual perverts, for kidnappers, for those who lie and give false testimony or who do anything else contrary to sound doctrine”

6.    Romans 1:26-27

“Because they do this, God has given them over to shameful passions. Even the women pervert the natural use of their sex by unnatural acts. In the same way the men give up natural sexual relations with women and burn with passion for each other. Men do shameful things with each other, and as a result they bring upon themselves the punishment they deserve for their wrongdoing.”
