Jesuit Vow Of Poverty: Why Pope Francis Owns Nothing Of His Own

As the leader of the Catholic Church in the entire world, one would assume that Pope Francis receives a generous salary in compensation for his many duties. However, the truth is quite the opposite.

Francis is the first Jesuit Pope and the first from a religious order since 1831. That means he is the first Pope to have lived under a "vow of poverty" since the mid-19th century. All priests are supposed to live simply, but members of religious orders take a specific vow of poverty. "

Jesuits take three vows of poverty, chastity and obedience and a fourth vow of obedience specifically in regard to worldwide mission.

When an individual takes the vow of poverty, he or she chooses to renounce personal worldly possessions and instead engage in communal sharing of resources. For instance, in certain cases, the vow of poverty rebukes the acceptance of any personal material profit, such as profits from labor.

He does, however, have access to a large fund of charitable money that he freely distributes to those in need as he wishes.
