Your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying, This is the way, walk in it,Whenever you turn to the right hand or whenever you turn to the left – Isaiah 30:21 NKJV.
Could it be we sometimes miss the word of the Lord for us or His voice because we are listening wrongly? One such can even result from an expectation suggested in this verse. It says your ears will hear a word behind you, it seems to literally suggest the direction from where the voice will come. More so, it might leave you waiting to hear the voice of God with your physical ears. While that might happen and does happen, that is the spectacular.
For we do not necessarily hear the voice of God with our ears like we hear our friends and those around talk to us. That is human communication with voice in the range of our natural audible frequency.
Remember, your body is the temple of God and God dwells in you by His Spirit (1 Cor 3:16, 6:19). So if He is going to talk to you, He is normally going to do so from the inside. Generally, not from behind. And you do not necessarily hear Him with your physical ears, for God is spirit and speaks therefore to our spirits. No doubt the author of Hebrews wrote, “But solid food belongs to those who are of full age, that is, those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil” (Hebrews 5:14 NKJV).
For even as we have physical senses, even so we have spiritual senses that relate and receive from the Spirit of God. Paul wrote in 1 Corinthians 2:14, “The natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; nor can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned” (NKJV). So it goes, that the voice of the Lord is not meant for your natural ears.
A few verses earlier, Paul emphasized some truths. He wrote, Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, nor have entered into the heart of man the things which God has prepared for those who love Him.” But God has revealed them to us through His Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things, yes, the deep things of God. For what man knows the things of a man except the spirit of the man which is in him? Even so no one knows the things of God except the Spirit of God.
Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might know the things that have been freely given to us by God. These things we also speak, not in words which man’s wisdom teaches but which the Holy Spirit teaches, comparing spiritual things with spiritual (1 Corinthians 2:9-13).
Do not look out for a physical voice from outside when listening to the Lord, listen on the inside with your spirit, for there He resides by His Spirit and speaks to you from the inside.
Thank you, Lord, for the illumination in your word that comes to me daily, helping me to grow in my knowledge of you on to perfection in Christ.
As exercise my spiritual senses in living by your word, they are enhanced and refined to discern your voice even better in the name of Jesus.
