Much of what goes down in their lodges and Temples behind closed doors is shrouded in mystery, and this has sparked much discussion about the world's oldest and most secretive society. Kenyans got a small taste of what goes on behind the scenes yesterday, but there's still a lot they don't know.
Pictures of the All Saints Cathedral in Nairobi, Kenya
It is widely held that many of the world's most recognizable landmarks and structures would not exist without the freemasons. Some of the most recognizable structures in Kenya, and Nairobi in particular, were constructed by Freemasons. For instance, the All Saints Cathedral on Kenyatta Avenue was likely designed by Temple Moore, a British architect and Freemason in Kenya. The colonial government commissioned the construction of the church in 1917.
The Holy Family Basilica, among other churches, is located in the central business district and is often considered to have been founded by freemasons. The Nairobi School, the Supreme Court building, the City Hall, the Jamhuri School, and many other public institutions and offices are all housed in Mason-built facilities.
Built in the 1950s and boasting a 165-foot-tall clock tower, City Hall was built by Cobb & Archer and was the tallest structure in Nairobi at the time. In 1981, the 13-story City Hall Annex was built and attached to the building, increasing its size. The Nairobi Governor's offices are located here.
