Sunday 14 March 2021 was a special day to the catholic diocese of Bungoma and the entire Christian family as a new catholic parish was born.
Bungoma residents led by the Governor Hon. Wycliffe Wangamati and other leaders witnessed the inauguration of Maliki Parish at St. Marcella catholic church Lukhokhwe in Milima ward, Tongaren sub county.
Bishop Obanyi underscored the importance of the birth of the new parish and urged the congregants to seek spiritual nourishment regularly and to observe the covid-19 protocal.
Addressing the congregation during the ceremony, Governor Wangamati expressed his gratitude to the congregants for their efforts in achieving their dream of having a parish and promised to support any church projects that will follow.
In addition, he revealed that the process of upgrading his scholarship program will start in June 2021 emphasizing that it will help in giving many children across the county equal opportunities and access to education.
"I am targeting to enroll additional 1000 bright but needy students into my scholarship program this year. The identification and vetting process will begin in June 2021 at the ward level whereby the level of need and vulnerability of the applicants will be assessed by our vetting panel." He said.
More so, Wangamati called upon parents, the clergy and the community at large to partner with the county government during the vetting process to ensure that more students who deserve scholarship are considered in the scheme unveiling that 1,600 students have so far benefited from the program.
On the other hand, the area member of parliament Hon. Simiyu Eseli noted that the birth of the parish will open doors to emergence of more sub parishes hence will help reduce distance for congregants and enable more residents to access spiritual services.
He emphasized that the initiative will help reduce the advancing social immoralities and crime rates in the entire area.
