Matthias is the disciple that was chosen to replace Judas Iscariot after Jesus Christ had ascended to heaven. The book of Acts 1:21-26 gives an account of how Matthias was chosen in the presence of the other disciples. Having been chosen possibly as the 13th disciple of Jesus, he immediately resumed the role of discipleship in the absence of him master Jesus Christ.
Meanwhile Judas Iscariot is always recorded as a traitor after he betrayed Jesus Christ leading to the crucifixion of Christ. According to the bible, on realising what he had done, Judas attempted to return the money he had been given after betraying Jesus but the officials refused to take it back. Judas then went ahead to buy land where he hang himself.
The news about Judas' death went all over the land, a move that prompted the disciples to look for a replacement. However, the bible doesn't record the procedure in which the disciples followed in choosing Judas' replacement.
